Explore. Build. Defend. Together.
Khang Le (the lead designer of Hawken) and a group of 4 other people have been working on what looks to be an impressive early showing: a game titled Towers, and they’ve released a trailer a few weeks ago. Recently they’ve dropped a few more images and more information on their twitter page. Check out the video below:
Trailer Thoughts
From the trailer, we can see what appears to be a game that has a very Breath of the Wild feel, with an interesting and very cool art style, perhaps in the vein of Shadow of the Colossus with massive and otherwise bizarre creatures. From their tagline “Explore. Build. Defend. Together.” it appears that the major portions will be focused on something like an open world exploration, trading, and fighting game, maybe as a result of the impact and the success of ARK, Monster Hunter and perhaps even Conan the Barbarian. Other viewers have mentioned the potential cross of Don’t Starve meets Dark Souls meets Horizon: Zero Dawn. There’s also what appears to be a strong influence from Hayao Miyazaki and his films, especially with the usage of masks, and what they appear to be doing in the marketing of the game with the mask competition.
Musically, the sound is incredible from Michael Reola, with amazingly deep depths and high highs, and gives a feeling of a complex and vast world. Lastly, from the trailer, slogan, and FAQs multiplayer will be a major portion of the game with 15-25 players running on various instances with something like server resets every few weeks of gameplay. With limited resources, trading between players will be crucial in order to survive and even possibly win.
Looks like Monster Hunter crossed with Dont Starve and they spun it around a setting that feels like BotW meets AoT. Crazy good vibes and something something something… VERY interested!
There seems to be lots of hype around the release of the trailer and leading into the development of the game, but we’ll have to reign in and keep our expectations in check considering the team is only “6 people” (5+ various contractors) at this point, and we are yet unaware of the pricing for the game. Additionally, if they release early access, it could prove to be a way to gather and grow the player base without having an extremely negative reaction as we can remember from the marketing hype from Sony and subsequent negative release built into No Man’s Sky.
Over the last few days, they’ve released info on the game that will be possible to play in 4k, and have released a couple of high res images (5760 x 3600) to show the potential.
It appears that the game will drop its release on PC, but for the moment it’s not totally clear if the switch or other consoles will be targeted. If you want to follow more development, check the latest with Dreamlit Entertainment by visiting dreamlit.games or the team’s Twitter page, but also look for more news on the game and more information on the release date, and system requirements from us dropping soon as we know more.
FAQs & Information – What We Know So Far
What is Towers? A fantasy world-building game. The core experience is focused on building an ecosystem and town (towers). Keeping the balance between nature and civilization is crucial.
What makes Towers unique?
- Many survival games out there focus on hoarding and dominance. For Towers, we would like to encourage growing and sharing between players.
- Games like Rust have an arbitrary server reset every few weeks of gameplay. Towers will have a win and lose condition that will play out in a similar timeline.
- Trading! If you watch the trailer, you can see the various caravans shots. Trading between players will be crucial to win/reset the server. Players are limited to the resources abundant in the area near where they build their base. This will encourage them to trade with each other (wooden bases trading with Ore bases, etc).
